What this department does

Debt management helps people and businesses who owe the CRA and cannot pay the full balance at once. Agents can discuss payment arrangements, outstanding balances, and options when you are in financial hardship. They do not replace the regular tax information lines for refund or filing questions.

This toll-free line assists with:

  • Payment arrangements
  • Debt relief options
  • Financial hardship enquiries
  • Outstanding tax balances

Hours of operation

Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (Eastern time), except holidays. The same number is also used by the Digital Assets Compliance Division.

Hours can change on holidays and during peak filing periods.

Why to call this department

  • You received a balance owing and need a payment arrangement.
  • You cannot pay in full and want to explain financial hardship.
  • You want to confirm how much is outstanding and which program account it belongs to.
  • A previous payment plan has lapsed and you need to restart it.
  • You want to know what happens if you miss a payment.

Why you may have received a call from this number

  • Collections or debt management may call about an unpaid personal or business tax debt.
  • You may get a follow-up after a reminder letter, a requirement to pay, or a missed arrangement.
  • Because this number is shared with digital assets, a crypto compliance call can also show the same caller ID.
  • A real CRA collector will identify the agency, refer to a debt already on your account, and allow you to call this published number back. Immediate payment by gift card is a scam.

Have this ready before you call

  • SIN or business number
  • The amount shown on your latest statement or letter
  • A realistic monthly amount you can pay
  • Details of income, expenses, or hardship if you are asking for relief

Other things to know

  • Ask for digital assets if your call is about crypto reporting rather than a payment plan.
  • Making a payment arrangement does not cancel interest that may continue to accrue.
  • Verify any callback number against this directory before you share banking information.
